Interview Highlights:
In this exclusive double-segmented interview hosted by Michael Yorba, the interview explores the history, growth and progressive goals of PH Glatfelter. The global supplier of specialty paper and fiber-based engineered materials, PH Glatfelter, is celebrating their 150th anniversary in 2014. To acknowledge this milestone, Dante Parrini reminisces the history of GLT’s humble beginnings and how today Glatfelter is approaching revenue of two billion annually; selling and marketing products in about 100 countries worldwide making it a leader in global growth markets.

The Glatfelter’s history is a motivating American Dream anecdote that is an inspiration for all growing companies. GLT’s roots go back to 1864 during the American Civil War in which Philip H. Glatfelter, a Swiss-German Apprentice paper maker, bought the bankrupted newsprint paper mill with his life savings. Gradually, Philip and his successors built the once depleted company into a successful and resourceful one.

“Company lore indicates that the first application for Glatfelter paper was for the printing of hand bills for the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln,” Parrini notes. The company has a rich history in producing high-quality printing and writing paper, and is a leader in book publishing, postage stamps, playing cards, greeting cards and envelopes. . Some products matured, others faced secular decline and therefore the company began to focus their effort in redeploying some of their capital, leveraging its balance sheet and investing in growing global fiber-based engineered material businesses. Today, the company has diversified and is also a leader in fast-growing, dynamic markets in absorbent solutions for feminine hygiene, adult incontinence and specialty wipes, beverage filtration papers for tea bags and single-serve coffee applications, nonwoven wallcovering, and metallized papers.

Parrini states, “PH Glatfelter has done so well because of its Core Values—integrity, financial discipline, mutual respect, customer focus and environmental and social responsibility—that influence the way we make decisions, allocate resources, treat all stakeholders, and find ways to win the right way,” GLT’s goals as a company for 2014 are to continue to be smart in strategic acquisitions, invest in growing organically, continue to profitably grow revenues, and find other ways to create sustainable value over time . “It is important to balance short-term goals and objectives with our long-term strategy so that year in and year out we deliver results that everyone in our team can be absolutely proud of as PH Glatfelter remains committed to enriching lives through innovation,” Parrini continued.
