Brad: PEOPLE Helping Glatfelter Go "Beyond Paper"

Brad

The best way to learn about the benefits and rewards of a Glatfelter career is to hear about it from Glatfelter PEOPLE themselves. Each employee’s story is different, but all of them reflect the value we place on our PEOPLE and their unique contributions to success.

Q.

What drove your decision to join Glatfelter?

I had moved to Baltimore as a promotion with my previous employer and I was looking to move back to Pennsylvania for personal reasons. At the time, Glatfelter was a $700 million dollar corporation, almost 30 times the size of my current employer. It provided a lot more opportunity for growth & development, plus the position location was perfect.

Q.

What was your first position with Glatfelter? Describe the additional opportunities you’ve experienced during your tenure.

I was hired in 2004 as an Inside Sales Representative for the Engineered Products group. Since then, I have served as an interim Export Coordinator and have been promoted to a position in Outside Sales. Glatfelter has provided the opportunity to grow both personally and professionally, including paying for the majority of my MBA, which I completed in May 2008.

Q.

What has been your most rewarding career moment at Glatfelter?

I have had opportunities to work with people at all levels of the organization to complete various projects and acquire new business. The most rewarding career moment to date was landing a substantial account during the 2008-09 recession timeframe. Not only did the effort require participation from my level as a Sales Representative up to and including our COO, we were able to sell Glatfelter’s value proposition and service program. That experience continues to give me confidence in our corporate model and strategy moving forward.

Q.

What is your primary responsibility within Glatfelter’s operations?

I have account and business development responsibility for Envelope & Converting customers within North America. My territory covers cities like Montreal, Toronto, Minneapolis, Dallas, & Chicago.

Q.

Tell us about an exciting or challenging project you have worked on at Glatfelter.

About a year ago, we were working on a project for artist’s papers that required real time testing by an actual artist as the paper was being run on the paper machine in Spring Grove. The coordination with scheduling, production, customer travel, & stock prep went off without a hitch and we were able to land a nice piece of business that continues today.

Q.

What are the key skills and competencies required in your current role?

A good sales rep has a certain tenacity and drive to succeed because pay and advancement are results of good performance. That being said, people skills and a willingness to travel allow for lower stress levels because you won’t get intimidate by airport delays or chatting with people you don’t know that well as you build relationships. From an education standpoint, a sound understanding of supply chain principles, mathematics, computer systems, and finance help me to search out industry trends and capitalize on opportunities that might be missed by others.

Q.

What advice would you give to someone considering employment with Glatfelter?

You should look beyond any stereotypes placed on the paper & forestry industries. There is sometimes a negative perception in the media due to the perception of our environmental impact or declining growth prospects. There are winners in every industry and Glatfelter’s focus on sustainability (Financial, Social, and Environmental) will allow it to be a winner in the decades to come.

Q.

What differentiates Glatfelter from other companies that you could work for? What makes Glatfelter special?

Our commitment to Social Responsibility allow me to take advantage of community service programs offered at the local hospital (WellSpan) and the United Way of York County (Emerging Leaders Society). My manager and the company as a whole support my involvement with various meetings and service projects. I’m not sure, having talked with colleagues in the community, that all local employers are as committed to these types of programs. This helps make my career rewarding both personally and professionally.

Q.

Can you talk about a time that you saw one or more of our Core Values displayed?

There are countless examples of Glatfelter displaying our core values. Many times over Glatfelter PEOPLE show up for community service projects such as Habitat for Humanity or the United Way giving campaign. Recently, Glatfelter’s Wellness initiative has taken on sponsoring some events locally, such as 5K road races, to promote wellness at Glatfelter and in the larger community in which we live and work. Glatfelter’s core values are displayed and promoted at various meetings and events throughout the year. They are understood and followed by each and every employee from line workers all the way up to senior management. The core values are the very foundation of our company’s success for almost 150 years.

Q.

How do you strike a good work/life balance? Does the company help you do this?

I travel a decent amount with a family at home. I also have responsibilities at my church and a few different community organizations. Glatfelter provides me the opportunity to earn a living, help support my family, and really enjoy what I do for a career. Since I like my job, it allows for a lower stress level at home when I have that precious time to be with my family and friends.
