Contributing to our Communities

Glatfelter PEOPLE are contributing to the global communities in which they live.

In 2017, our Glatfelter Ohio Operations PEOPLE continued their successful partnership with local Tiffin Elementary School, which included greeting students on Friday mornings, helping sixth graders design wooden race cars for the first annual Pinewood Derby event and promoting literacy by providing a copy of children’s books printed on Glatfelter paper. Glatfelter PEOPLE also launched a “Readers in the Classroom” campaign, in which volunteers read to kindergarten classes at Tiffin and Mt. Logan Elementary Schools each week. In June, the Ohio School Board Administration recognized Glatfelter with the Community Partner of the Year award for its impactful and evolving partnership with Tiffin Elementary School.  Community support in Ohio also extended to sponsoring local youth sporting teams and participating in March for Dimes and Breast Cancer Awareness.

In Dresden, Germany, the facility rallied around a local sports organization sponsoring registrations and equipment for children. As in many of the German facilities, Glatfelter PEOPLE in Dresden served as volunteer firefighters and emergency responders with the Technisches Hilfswerk, a civil protection organization coordinated by the German government.

In Scaër, France, Glatfelter PEOPLE served as volunteer fire fighters and participated in local community events, like a local carnival called La Cavalcade de Scaër.

Glatfelter Gernsbach (Germany)  supported local cultural organizations and partnered with local educators to sustain healthy families. Since 2013, they have volunteered with the junior high school/secondary school, the International Chamber of Commerce in Karlsruhe and the Chamber of Handicrafts in Gernsbach. In doing so, they have educated students on career choices by familiarizing them with different occupations, increased the acceptance of technology, and helped them understand the working environment and the Company. The team also sponsored a youth football tournament through its partnership with Realschule Gernsbach.

In Falkenhagen, Germany, Glatfelter lent charitable support to the local art club, “Friends of Art - Pritzwalk,” which recently expanded into a new, modern building and held a special exhibition honoring a hometown artist. The team also donated jackets to the youth club of the local Pritzwalk fire brigade. A well-equipped fire brigade, with a motivated pool of young talent, ensures safety in the region and benefits the entire community.

Glatfelter’s Ober-Schmitten, Germany, facility provided colorful glassine paper produced at the facility to the local elementary school. The students then visited the mill and presented Glatfelter PEOPLE with glassine paper stars that were used as “tinker stars” for the mill’s Christmas Party.

In Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, Glatfelter contributed funding toward the building of a new maternity ward at the local hospital.  The team also sponsored a year-long urban ecology and community engagement program for teenagers, which immersed them in environmental and sustainability learning experiences.

Establishing Glatfelter as a committed and caring new neighbor in the community, Glatfelter’s Fort Smith, Arkansas, PEOPLE engaged in a variety of projects in 2017 by supporting the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club and the Fort Smith Community Services Clearinghouse. The team also participated in a local fundraiser to benefit Alzheimer’s.

Throughout the year, our Pennsylvania Operations and Corporate teams provided time and talent to local nonprofit agencies and donated their skills and money to a variety of causes. In partnership with the local water company and health system, Glatfelter supported a Summer Reading Program for local children. The Company also participated in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Light the Night” event, and a team raised money for Junior Achievement through a bowling event.

The Philippines Team demonstrated incredible commitment to the local community as the region faced political unrest in 2017. The facility made donations of water, food and personal hygiene supplies to the Marawi Relief Operation and Relief Center. The facility also lent support to the local schools with donations of paint, plywood and lunch packs for students. The mill also refurbished a passenger van and donated it to the local township and made quarterly donations of medical supplies to the local Barangay Health Center.
