Contributing to our Communities

Together Glatfelter PEOPLE are contributing to the betterment of the communities in which we operate and live around the world.

In 2016, our Glatfelter Ohio Operations PEOPLE continued their successful partnership with a local elementary school. Teams of Glatfelter PEOPLE visited Tiffin Elementary School every Friday morning to greet the kids as they start their day, providing encouragement, helping with homework…anything to make a positive impact for the students. In a role reversal in 2016, students greeted Glatfelter PEOPLE as they arrived at work one Friday, offering encouragement and using communication skills. Glatfelter PEOPLE help students in other ways as well. They help 5th and 6th graders with their science fair projects, and promote literacy by providing a popular children’s book, printed on Glatfelter Paper, to the elementary students. Supporting the United Way in Ross County, Glatfelter PEOPLE helped assemble “Mighty Active Packs” to provide school children with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food on weekends.

In Scaër, France three percent of Glatfelter PEOPLE serve as volunteer fire fighters and participate in local community events, like a local carnival called La Cavalcade de Scaër.

Every year Glatfelter Gernsbach (Germany) supports local cultural organizations and partners with local educators to sustain healthy families today and develop a healthy workforce of the future. They have been cooperating with the junior high school/secondary school, the International Chamber of Commerce in Karlsruhe and the Chamber of Handicrafts in Gernsbach since 2013. In doing so, they expand career choices for students by familiarizing them with different occupations; increasing the acceptance of technology; and helping them understand the working environment, the Company and its economics.

Our PEOPLE in Falkenhagen, Germany, had the opportunity to help a citizen of the Prignitz region of Brandenburg, where our mill is located. This person had developed a rare blood disease and needed a stem cell donation. They started by organizing a donation among co-workers to support a donor-match testing campaign. Management doubled the prize money from recognition related to a vocational training program and dedicated this to the stem cell donation program. But they didn’t stop there. The Falkenhagen team approached the German Football Association for support, and received a football jersey signed by the star player Jérôme Agyenim Boateng, which was raffled off to increase the contributions.

Our Falkenhagen team also helps include people with disabilities in an annual sporting event in Prignitz. This is a great opportunity to meet new friends, spend time with colleagues and have an enjoyable day, while serving our community.

Every year during the Christmas holiday, Glatfelter PEOPLE in Ober-Schmitten, Germany, provide colorful glassine paper produced at the facility to the local elementary school. In 2016, the elementary school students visited the facility and presented glassine paper stars to decorate windows. These “tinker stars” were also used at the location’s Christmas Party.

Establishing Glatfelter as a committed and caring new neighbor in the community, Glatfelter’s Fort Smith, Arkansas, facility raised a ceremonial flag in late 2016 to celebrate our core values and commitment to long-term success. The Fort Smith community was actively engaged in this event and expressed its support, as Glatfelter embarks on an $80 million capital investment that will bring up to 83 highly skilled manufacturing jobs to the area.

Throughout the year, Glatfelter PEOPLE in our Pennsylvania Operations participate in a variety of nonprofit community events that benefit educational, civic, environmental and arts organizations. From leading in a Junior Achievement classroom to raising money for the United Way, Glatfelter PEOPLE support the communities in which they live and work.

Often, our Pennsylvania Operations team up with Glatfelter Corporate to provide time and talent to local nonprofit boards in the area and donate their skills and money to specific causes. Partnering with the local water company and health system, Glatfelter supported a Summer Reading Program for local children. Glatfelter was also recognized as the top corporate fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Light the Night” event, and raised money for Junior Achievement through a fun bowling event. Another example of community outreach is Glatfelter PEOPLE showcasing their talents in a singing competition to benefit the arts.

Our Glatfelter facility in the Philippines identified a useful application for loose strap scraps, which are used to truss materials in the packaging and baling of its pulp sheets. Weavers who work in this location craft baskets and other creative containers with these scraps that are used both at home and throughout the Philippine facility. Demonstrating further commitment to its local community, the Philippine mill also hosted an on-site blood drive for the Philippine Red Cross.

In these and other ways, Glatfelter PEOPLE make a difference in the quality of life right where they are. Read more about Glatfelter People in Motion report, action and activities in our communities around the world.
